Tons of nuclear waste has been piling up at more than 70 commercial reactor sites in the U.S. Granholm told the Consortia by video, but we can no longer ignore the back end of the fuel cycle. Nuclear energy is a vital part of America’s green energy future, U.S. Everyone hopes to avoid another Yucca Mountain, but unanimity will likely be difficult to come by. There was much discussion about equity and justice and what “consent” actually looks like. The $26 million invested in the Consortia will stimulate a national conversation, Camargo said, and over time, that will help ensure that potential host communities are truly informed and willing. SCE views consent-based siting for both interim and permanent spent fuel facilities as the most reliable and likely path to success.” Past efforts failed to place consent at the center of a repository program, and we must learn and adapt. Government Accountability Office’s map of sites storing spent nuclear waste. A repository program is vital to making more near-term, interim storage acceptable to potential host communities. “The plan requires help from Congress in order to authorize consent-based siting for one or more permanent deep geologic repositories. It’s the most concrete plan we have seen in years,” said Manuel Camargo, principal manager for strategic planning, by email. “We’re encouraged by the DOE’s three-stage roadmap that leads to federal consolidated interim storage in 10 to 15 years. It’s good news to Southern California Edison, which manages San Onofre’s tear-down and is stuck babysitting the waste while the federal government figures things out. Each is getting about $2 million to “help DOE learn from and involve communities across the country in the consent-based siting process, answer questions and concerns, and develop an understanding so that we are good neighbors even before moving in.” In June, the DOE awarded $26 million to the Consortia - 13 nonprofit and university teams, including several from California - tasked with getting this consent-based siting ball rolling. The long-term will take a lot longer and be more challenging which is why the near term is so important.” It’s a reminder that we need to have strategies taking shape for interim storage, so that spent fuel has a place to go, in addition to long-term permanent storage. The experience in other countries is that building consent takes quite a while. “That remains to be seen because congressional funding for these kinds of activities has historically been uneven - although the Southern California delegation has been key to keeping support in recent years. “My general impression is that this timetable is realistic, but probably could be accelerated a little bit if DOE could provide sustained support that is credible,” said David Victor, professor at UC San Diego’s School of Global Policy and Strategy, and chair of the San Onofre Community Engagement Panel. ‘Realistic’ Screenshot from DOE presentation How quickly things move will likely boil down to how important Congress feels this quest is, and how much money it dedicates to the task. Of course we’ve all learned that such timelines can be purely aspirational - DOE was supposed to start accepting the nation’s commercial nuclear waste for permanent disposal in, um, 1998 - but again, after decades of paralysis, this is at least some progress. That’s expected to take another 2-3 years, and the DOE won’t entertain volunteer hosts just yet. We’re in Stage 1 right now: “Planning and Capacity Building.” This involves earning the trust of local communities, encouraging “mutual learning” and understanding of nuclear waste management. The feds plan to figure that out over the next decade-and-a-half.Īt its “ Consent-based Siting Consortia Kickoff” on Tuesday, July 25, the DOE spelled out three distinct phases for its renewed effort to enlist communities ready, willing and able to host the nation’s nuclear waste, at least temporarily. Yes, by 2038 (more or less), millions of pounds of spent fuel from San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station and other commercial reactors could be preparing to leave their steel-and-concrete tombs and relocate to a new, albeit temporary, federal home or homes. Department of Energy has a timeline to “operation readiness” for a new site to hold America’s nuclear waste: This Google Earth image shows how close the expanded dry storage area for spent nuclear waste will be to the shoreline at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

I begin moving the audio clips around away from their sequential order. The more you listen to what sound is available the better you gain a sense of the strength of the story.Īfter I have edited and selected the most essential audio content, I progress to editing in a more detailed way. I can then always refer back to the original long edit timeline to re-introduce any audio or video which I may have been edited out previously. I always make edit changes and work on the latest edit version of the editing timeline. As I progress, I make another new editing timeline version (edit three) and so it continues. I then start editing the edit two version of the timeline removing anything that is no longer needed for now – so reducing the duration of the overall edit. After making the edit one timeline, I then make a duplicate of that edit and rename it edit two. Once I have listened to all the sync sound and have made the first extended edit of all the good bits of sync sound, I name this edit – edit one. I then start to edit and assemble a long edit timeline of all the best sync sound as I listen to the clips. To begin editing this type of film, I first transfer all the filmed rushes into my edit system and then spend time listening to all the sync sound. It was filmed as the actual events happened. The Strength & Vulnerability Bunker film was not scripted or storyboarded it was more of an observational documentary-style. They can become plugged with clothing, or other debris, and then they will act just like a normal ball round.Īll of this means that we need to pick the heaviest hollow point bullet that reliably expands to the widest diameter we can achieve, while still penetrating between 12-18 inches in ballistics gel. Some hollow points will not expand when shot. We also need to consider how reliable the hollow point round is. More penetration is not better, as shooting through a person only endangers other people, and does not increase stopping power. This insures that a bullet will enter the body deep enough to damage vital organs. The FBI protocol for ballistics gel testing requires that a round penetrate between 12-18 inches of ballistic gel. It has a lot of energy and mass, but it doesn’t penetrate very well. This is why birdshot in a shotgun isn’t a good home defense round. We know that we should use the heaviest handgun round we can find, but it must penetrate deep enough to affect the bodies vital organs. Lastly, we need to discuss what the bullet does once it strikes a person. I bet you thought 9mm vs 40 was going to be a little simpler than this! At a certain point you just can’t hold onto a round that is that powerful. You’ll find that increasing velocity directly increases recoil. Because momentum is conserved, the amount of force exiting the front of the pistol is equal to that going into your hand. You would also have to increase the amount of energy you put into the bullet to accelerate it to that speed. Moreover, that temporary cavity would have to do more damage than the permanent wound channel caused by the bigger slower bullet. If you were able to accelerate the bullet fast enough to create a temporary cavity, you might be on to something. Given this, we should go for the faster lighter bullet right? This means that if you double velocity you quadruple kinetic energy, where as if you double the mass of the bullet you only double the energy. Those of you who remember high school physics might recall the equation for kinetic energy equals one half times the mass, multiplied by the velocity squared. Here is a shot of the temporary cavity from a high velocity rifle cartridge. We can’t accelerate pistol rounds fast enough to do so. The only reason to accelerate a bullet faster is to try and create a temporary cavity. We need to choose a heavier bullet because more of the energy from the bullet will be transferred to the target effectively. This is an important factor why rifle rounds work better than pistol rounds. Sure, there is a temporary cavity for both 9mm and 40 cal bullets, but it’s a paltry thing compared to that from a high speed rifle round. Only rifles can create a significant temporary cavity, because the bullet must be traveling at a much higher velocity to develop the required pressure wave. The second way is by creating a temporary cavity using a high pressure wave behind the bullet. The first way is mechanical crushing damage of the bullet displacing tissue. This is because there are two ways a bullet actually damages a person. It certainly isn’t as widely used as 5.56mm, and as a result, most agencies would never consider adopting that caliber, even though it’s arguably one of the best.Īs a good rule of thumb, you should seek to shoot the heaviest handgun bullet weight for your chosen caliber. If you’ve read my article reviewing my POF Renegade Plus in 300 Blackout, you’ll know what a great caliber that cartridge is. The 300 Blackout is a perfect example of this. There are amazing calibers that no department will issue due to logistical considerations. They have budgetary considerations that we may or may not have, and they have to be able to purchase large quantities of guns, gun parts, and bullets for training. However, in recent years, law enforcement agencies have started to transition from the 40 s&w back to the 9mm cartridge. It’s important to keep in mind that police departments, and federal agencies, have more considerations in selecting their bullets and guns than we do. This is a very common question, and I think we should certainly use their decisions as a metric to keep an eye on. Should We Pick The Caliber That Law Enforcement Agencies Use? But to safely navigate where we are going we must remember also where we have come from. The present is digital and the future will be more so, mostly to humankind’s immense benefit. None of this proves that the past must be archived in hard copy for ever or that people should store banknotes under the mattress. Ministers had not grasped the value buried in those old clerical records. Last week it was revealed that the Home Office had destroyed landing cards that proved the entitlement of Windrush-generation migrants to be in Britain. The same anxiety attends concerns about huge government IT projects – the administration of universal credit, for example, and NHS systems – on which millions of lives and livelihoods depend. The virtual location of the crisis, exposing the abstract quality of digitised money, compounded people’s feelings of helplessness. This week many TSB customers were locked out of their bank accounts due to the botched introduction of a new IT system. That journey is thrilling when it works but terrifying when it fails. I personally am super stoked that the OmniGroup has jumped on this train early on in the game, especially since full-fledged OmniFocus, while powerful, can be overwhelming at times. Go ahead: click around and play with the interactive demo to explore the different ways in which your tasks can be shown to you. Pretty neat, right? As you can see, OmniFocus on the Apple Watch will include its own app, along with support for Glances and Notifications via a tap on the wrist. We’ve got an exclusive preview of what’s coming to Apple Watch from the OmniGroup themselves, and we’d like to share it with you. Not having OmniFocus on the Watch would be very “ <<<<<,” as the kids are saying. It’s great to have a widget in your Notification Center on iOS that breaks down what needs to be done for the day, but I am a spoiled millennial who is consumed by first-world problems. Today, the OmniGroup has announced that their beloved productivity platform will be making its way to the Apple Watch – something I was worried might take a while, being an avid user of their service myself. She can tell you all you need to know about the most recent version of OmniFocus for iPhone. I myself am a more recent convert, but others including Christine Chan have experience with the platform dating back to the time of its inception. We’ve covered OmniFocus here on AppAdvice extensively. David Allen’s widely renowned “Getting Things Done” is the ultimate resource for learning about this, if you’re super interested. For those who haven’t, it is a productivity suite of apps that is focused around the “getting things done” model, otherwise known as GTD. If you’d remotely consider yourself a productivity nerd, you’ve probably heard of OmniFocus by the OmniGroup. To that end, here is my evaluation of some of the more common tools. For example, you may want a writing program that better enables you to write chapter by chapter, has file management, or lets you set daily goals. Now-all of this being said, there are very valid reasons to want to find and use good tools to help you make the writing process easier. If you are looking for the best book writing software, I would highly recommend you ask yourself this question: is this search necessary, or am I distracting myself from my fear? But again, knowing you are afraid, and connecting that fear to your endless search for something to distract you, is not an easy thing to do. I wrote an in-depth blog post that details the 6 book writing fears and how to beat them. And I have seen many authors afraid to write a book, for any number of reasons (that usually boils down to the fear it will make them look stupid), so they install a writing assistant but never write a page. I have been the author afraid to write a book and using a distraction to avoid this fear many times. If you’re stuck on finding the “perfect” software, something else is holding you back.īut the ONLY way to actually accomplish anything is through doing the hard work…and that is scary.Īgain, I say that without judgment. The same is true for almost every other professional writer I know. I’ve been writing professionally for 15 years and wrote four New York Times Best Sellers with basic software. But after testing and trying all of them, I have yet to find software that helps write a book. That’s not to say writing software will never be relevant. In fact, most writing software adds complexity without any value (Exhibit A: Scrivener). Let me spare you time and money: software is not a relevant consideration for writing a great book and being a successful author. They spend so much time searching for the “perfect” book writing software (among other tools) that will magically make their writing better. Yet, this is where many beginning and amateur writers start. None of them used special book writing software to write their book. Do you know what all of them had in common? Think about your favorite authors-the ones whose books deeply affected your life. |
